The flag of the European Union consists of a blue field with twelve five-pointed golden stars in a circular formation at its centre. The flag's stars are said to represent the European people in a circle as a symbol of unity.

This flag was officially adopted by the European Union upon its formation in 1993; however, the design dates back to 1955.
